Star Wars Roleplaying Game: Saga Edition FAQ Updated - March, 2007 By Rodney Thompson
In May, the Star Wars Roleplaying Game: Saga Edition rulebook will be available. You've been asking plenty of questions about the new edition, so we've put together some of the top Frequently Asked Questions.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is Saga Edition?
Saga Edition is the upcoming core rulebook that relaunches the Star Wars Roleplaying Game line from Wizards of the Coast. It updates the core rules to cover all six of the Star Wars films, including Expanded Universe sources, and revamps the game to make it a better overall Star Wars gaming experience. For basic information about the book, check out the product page.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why a new edition?
For one thing, the last rulebook was released just before Attack of the Clones came out in 2002, and it didn't include rules and information based on Revenge of the Sith. Now that all six movies are out, Saga Edition can cover the entirety of the Star Wars saga. Additionally, the old core rulebook had fallen out of widespread circulation, which gave the authors a chance to revisit the rules and update them to create a better play experience. The new edition of the rules is designed to feel more like Star Wars and builds on advancements in game design over the last five years.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What's different about the rules?
A lot, actually. Though the game still uses many tenets of the d20 System that current players are familiar with, nearly all chapters of the book were revised. Classes have seen a major overhaul, as has the Force, the combat system, and the starships and vehicles system. Keep an eye on this web site for previews that detail some of the changes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Will my old books still work with Saga Edition?
There's no easy answer to this question, so the best response is "to varying degrees." Some parts of the rules have seen more revamps than others. For example, alien species and equipment would need a minimal amount of adjustment to be compatible with the Saga Edition rules, while prestige classes, feats, and other similar systems would need heavier conversion. Of course, the source material in your old books will not be invalidated, but some of the game mechanics might or might not work with the new edition of the game.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Will there be a conversion document available?
Yes. The developer of Saga Edition will provide a conversion document that should allow players and Gamemasters to convert to the new system with relative ease. You'll be able to get the document for free on this web site, on or near the launch date of the book.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When does Saga Edition come out?
The street date for the book is May 22, 2007. This coincides with the 30th anniversary celebration of the original Star Wars film.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What does "miniatures friendly" mean?
Some promotional pieces about the book have included mention of more "miniatures friendly" rules. While miniatures will not be required to play the game, many of the changes to Saga Edition make integrating miniatures easier. For example, many of the combat illustrations now use miniatures to show how certain actions and maneuvers work. Likewise, the game makes references to "squares" for movement, and we have adapted some of the more streamlined rules from the Star Wars Miniatures Game for the combat system, such as the way cover works. If you choose to use miniatures, the game will allow for much smoother integration.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Will there be other books compatible with Saga Edition?
Yes! The Star Wars Roleplaying Game line will include multiple products. When they're announced, new products will be included in the Wizards of the Coast product catalog and the web site's product page.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Will there be web support for Saga Edition?
Yes! This web site will continue to deliver new articles and information for free download, compatible with Saga Edition. We anticipate plenty of web support for the Saga Edition rules.
Will (insert name here) be in the rulebook?
At this time, we can't reveal too many specifics about what will or won't appear in the new core rulebook. However, feel free to leave suggestions for future sourcebooks on the Star Wars Roleplaying Game message boards.
